The Art of Matchmaking Shadchanut

The following 1902 letter was found within the Rutstein-Paretzkyn family archives. The letter contains many Yiddish proverbs and provides sociological insight into the activities of matchmakers and the culture of matchmaking in Europe during the 19th century. The letter captures the exchange between two matchmakers attempting to broker a marriage agreement between the daughter of a wealthy businessman, Tzvi Solevitchik of Humin, and an unknown party. Yiddish is typical of Belorussia and contains Russian, German, and Slovenian words.

It is unknown how the letter managed to find its way into the Rutstein-Paretzkyn family archives although it is possible that it was given to Jacob Rutstein as part of marriage negotiations between the Solevitchik family and himself. Assuming this is accurate, the marriage negotiations would fail as Jacob would ultimately marry Bessie Basha Paretzky, the daughter of Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch Paretzkyn and Esther Sarah Dubrow, in 1907.

To Abraham Leiser-Leibov Nisnevich for Sh. N.

To my Best friend Shloima Goldin:

Because I am now located in Igumen, it came up in my mind to have pity on a man who is beloved to me, closer like a relative, and I consider you as a relative. Therefore, you should now conduct yourself in silence, and not make noise like a windmill, and listen with intent to my words. Do not laugh or mock me—because you may be thinking to yourself: Has it been a long time that I myself was running around [listening and] flapping my wings like a hen? And I did not know what to do or how to behave? I know the meaning of suffering and difficulty. We [matchmakers] are unfortunately like a deer running around frantically and nobody’s heart aches for us. Only I alone had discovered a friend to one person, who is pleasing to other people as who does not dislike a few rubles?

And in addition to that, this [what I write] is a good deal/development as the truth shines and as it is supposed to be understood. Now you must understand being that I was ready to give one Kopek, and that I did not receive of a whole any percent Kopeks be paid for the efforts of my labors, which are conveniently nicely considered cheap. But now I will begin to lift your spirits and allow you to think about everything. [But please] don’t think that [what I write] is empty talk.

So you want to bring together grooms and brides? To bring together grooms with brides is not an enviable task. May a good Jew never know from such a thing. Before you begin explaining the situation, tears might well up in the eyes of one bride. And it seems that she doesn’t want to hear anything of “the groom, the groom.” And she begins to interfere with the matchmaker with her conversations. And yet she still wants to hear soonest about the end of negotiations. Another bride may not even imagine her own happiness from her joy as she is so happy she cannot describe it.

But because I am an old matchmaker, I know the full nature of any young woman. And to me it is not at all difficult. And yet to speak with a girl, this is what I have come to understand: To one bride, we must speak to go; and to one groom, that he must come.

The first thing we must begin talking about [in any marriage negotiations] are the available assets: and after that the groom goes out: and starts to blow, and begins to ask by the Shadchan, who in the meantime, he gives a cigarette. The Shadchan is excited by this because it is so that all Shadchanim are poor Jews. (Now, do not suspect this of me, for I do not smoke at all and to buy cigarettes you need to have a Groshen: and I [have none]. In the meantime, the groom thinks that the Shadchan is already [satisfied].

This, my friend, is how the world operates. The one who has money does well, and those who have more of it, do better. On top of that good [that money brings the groom] shall there be together with him a wife and they will celebrate well. Now I hope that my letter and its words should for you not be considered to harsh.

My best friend Shlome, the fittest thing is, being that I already know you are a husband, I can present to you an understanding [about a girl]. In the town of Humin, there is a very nice businessman named Tzvi Soloveichik. He is a very upstanding individual alone and also comes from a very nice lineage. And his wife comes from an even nicer lineage. She alone is from Bobruisk. She is one of those Katzenelsons and therefore one may even refrain from asking questions about everything regarding them.

By them, that is by Tzvi Soloveichik, there is a daughter a very pretty, happy one. This is one real uniquely special girl– a true beauty. You know that I know what beauty is. In addition, I know that she is very intelligent, well natured, and educated in several [languages]. Any other matchmaker would have written to you 1,000, but I write to you the truth about how much will be attached to the contractual agreement. I have spoken there, and they already asked questions and they liked everything they heard, and now we will only have to see what happens. Therefore, it is necessary that you write to me, about how it looks to you. I am telling you that this is very good [prospect].

Meir Nisnevich.
